MO Fugga
It's tough explaining to your kids why there's no such thing as cousins, aunts, and uncles. Especially when all 4 grandparents have passed too. Edited March 4, 2021 by MO Fugga
railfancwb
Not an only child, but small family. Relatives are thinly scattered, few and far between.
MO Fugga
My side both comes from medium to large families. Her side is almost extinct. None are in contact.
MO Fugga
My kids don't understand extended family structure the way most kids do automatically. Now that they're older, I need to steer them from the apathy low odds like this brings.

Swampfox762
Yup. Only brat. Supposidly had a sister that died. Married a girl with a brother 6 years older than her. Basically she's an only child too. After 55 years together...we sorta "get along"...and our kid understands us. What more could I ask for? 1

railfancwb
In the “old south” and no doubt other rural areas where multiple generations of a few families are still in place, there are entire family trees with phrases like “second cousin once removed”. I know people, and in fact have relatives, that understand such refined points of relationships. But I don’t understand them. I also know that when people were few and far between and travel was mostly by horseback or buggy, some family names could end up on both sides of a future family tree. railfancwb
It was probably just as well that we lived 500 miles from “family” and could only visit once a year, as there was this red haired cousin...
minervadoe
Both of my parents were only children. So, yeah, we had no cousins growing up. I guess it kind of effected my mindset, since my son has only met three of his five cousins.
crockett
Single brat as well, and I love being alone. I don't need or want anybody around me, those days are a thing of the past. Love the freedom and peace, zero drama in my house. I post a few times a day on a couple forums and chats, that's plenty of "interaction" for me. This level of independence seems scary to some, so I have heard. Edited March 4, 2021 by crockett

She grew up on a farm in northeast Iowa. Being the oldest, I was an only child for about 4 years and I can still remember it. I remember when they brought my little brother home from the hospital and I remember when he was a baby.
jfost11
I'm an only child but my wife is not. She has a younger brother here, and a sister, and three half-sisters in another state. To make a long story short, it would be less of a PITA by far if the wife were an only child as well.

One day it will be too late. This thread is pretty much exactly what the left and the rest of the environmentalist and ruling elite have hoped for and pursued with their propaganda over the years. No one had to fight a war to conquer the dinosaurs. They just faded away and the cockroaches got all their stuff.

Walt Longmire
Big family here. Tons of cousins. My ex was from a family of 6 girls. Lots of boys at our house. Took in a bunch of foster kids and adopted 2 of them.
