Gift cards...

Suppose I buy a McDonalds gift card, say $100, from a third party - Walmart, Lowe’s, Kroger etc.

where is that cash until I buy something at a McDonalds?

And suppose I buy that card at the local McDonalds, which is a franchise rather than company owned? Again, where is that cash until I buy something at a McDonalds?

wonder how much cash value is recorded for unused McDonalds’ gift cards, on average, at any time?

My bet - the cards are managed by a 3rd party financial company which keeps (holds) the "money", regardless of where the cards are purchased. When you buy one of those, the "loads the card" at the register, right? I think that's the point where the seller makes a transaction with the "bank".

Innerstin' question, and I bet Pelosi has her hands in it somewhere.
