norton 984 Posted July 18, 2018 G21H30- I enjoy walking through old cemeteries and looking for Civil War monuments and headstones. Its easy then to go to the net and find information on the regiment, where it served, battles fought etc. I see the 48th Indiana were mustered in at Elkhart In and fought at Vicksburg. Interesting. My GG fought at Gettysburg. Your great grandpa and mine were involved in the two battles that changed the War during the same time period. Quote Link to comment
G21H30 304 Posted July 18, 2018 Norton, I had the pictures and used the information from his tombstone to research his unit on the net. It's amazing that he served from May 6,1862 to July 15,1865 and survived the battles his unit fought in. Quote Link to comment
norton 984 Posted July 21, 2018 (edited) G21H30-I had trouble locating my GG's unit because I thought it was an Indiana Regiment. Turned out he enlisted in Ohio. 107th Ohio. Like your GG mine enlisted in 1862 and mustered out in 1865. He was in combat at Chansellorsville- Gettysburg- before the regiment headed south, finally ending up in Florida then Charleston before the end of the War. The marker I am sitting next to in my avatar is the flank marker for the regiment on Cemetery Hill at GB. Edited July 21, 2018 by norton Quote Link to comment
