Confusing English Language

It is interesting to me when I am typing and make a mistake using the wrong word and then realize I only have to change a letter or two and it's a completely different meaning.  There really is subtle differences that make it confusing if your not "from here".

In an English writing class, I had a professor use a Chinese woman's essay as an example of excellent writing.  He then asked why her writing was so good.  I told him that it was  because she learned to write properly from textbooks and we learned to write the way we spoke.  He laughed.
