railfancwb
The narrow gauge White Pass & Yukon Railroad was started because of the Alaska gold rush, beginning at Skagway. During WWII it was upgraded by the military as part of the war effort. When the minerals it was hauling became unprofitable it shut down for a few years, then started operations again as a tourist railroad. Virtually all the cruise ships going to/from Alaska stop in Skagway, and enough of their passengers take the train trip excursion to make this the most popular tourist railroad in the country. This picture shows one of these tourist trains on a loop bypassing the original and picturesque bridge which continues to be the symbol of the railroad.

railfancwb
“Galloping Goose” on Rio Grande Southern 3’ gauge railroad in southwest Colorado circa late 1940s. There were seven geese built; the first one was cannibalized to build one of the later ones. All six of the survivors still exist, and so far as I know all are operational. A faithful replica of the first one has been built. 3

In Minneapolis, MN IIRC, in the 40's the city was convinced by a political hack (Kid Cann Blumenfeld, http://www.citypages.com/news/the-forgotten-crime-boss-kid-cann-the-original-teflon-don-reigned-over-minneapolis-6570344) to end street car rail service. Then the political hacks got rid of electric street cars and put in buses they had a financial interest in. Then they tore up the rails so the street cars couldn't be re-lived. Now, the city has decided to dump the busses and put in light rail electrically powered, and lay rails again. Politics, money to be made and politicians to be bought. It never ends. railfancwb
Appears to be an old logging railroad track, where the logs were chained end to end and drug by the locomotive, rather than being loaded onto cars. Boards between rails allowed logs to skid along without snagging ties. End of log which would be bottom front was cut at an angle to also help prevent snagging. Tough way to earn a living, and logging is still one of the most dangerous.

The exact same thing happened in Long Beach CA. Years ago I was living in N. Long Beach and the rail tracks from WWII ran right down the center of Long Beach Blvd. to the ocean front. After all those years they decided to remove them and guess what, again it was the bus that got job because of the oil and rubber lobbies. Now they have light rail in the exact same location. My dad used to tell how he could get off his ship and catch to trolley and go all the way to Glendale to visit his sister and family.
