On the left is Norfolk & Western “J” 611, now owned by Virginia Transportation Museum. Recently restored for excursions this 4-8-4 is capable of 100+ mph on level pulling an excursion train.

On the right is former N&W 4-8-0 number 475, a much older and less powerful locomotive owned and operated by Strasbourg RR in PA.

The former stablemates were brought together at Strasbourg for a railfan event.

Maybe they are doing a restoration.

The British rail fans have built a new one of their classic steam locomotives from the ground up, so this effort isn’t without precedent.

The United States built replicas of the two locomotives featured in the 1869 Golden Spike ceremony, which admittedly were much smaller.

The Cass WV area now has operating locomotives representing the three major manufacturers of geared logging locomotives - Shay, Climax, Heisler. All are three truck locomotives. Several Shays and the Climax operate at the Cass Railroad State Park. The Heisler operates at Durbin, about 25 road miles from Cass. Nearby is a major radio astronomy site.

Which style? Remember, the almost invisible wedge at far right will clear snow like gang busters... at 60mph... unless it hits something big and tough and heavy hidden in a drift.

Don't think I'm that picky. But I like the way you think!
