I had raised a question earlier about the lump on the axle of the GE 44 ton diesel in a posted picture.

The specs say it has four traction motors.

Its stable mate, the GE 45 ton diesel, has two traction motors plus side rods.

I was wondering if parts had been juggled and a traction motor assembly from a 45 ton had been put in a 44 ton.

There is a railroad museum about an hour from me in Cowan TN which has a GE 44 ton diesel on display. So I made a field trip to answer my question.

Sure enough the lump on that axle is a gear box connected to a traction motor whose armature is parallel to the axle. And each truck has two traction motor assemblies.

So TOS has once again proven its value in educating people.

Seeing the donkey made me think of politics.  When Eisenhower was running for president my mother took me to the train station to see him.  That was the days of whistle stop campaigns.

My father said that Eisenhower was the best President.  I said that he did little, my father said, "Exactly!".
