Trains

In Portage Alaska I have driven my pickup up a gravel ramp and onto a flat rail car, along with other passenger vehicles. We then rode in our vehicles on the train through the tunnels under the mountains and into the coastal town of Whittier on Prince William Sound. There we drove off the rail car and parked our vehicle in town to head out into the Sound on a deer hunting adventure. Upon our return from hunting, we again drove onto a flat car for the ride back through the tunnels to Portage. The State has since modified the tunnels and added road bed along the tracks where the tunnels aren't necessary, and we can now drive through the tunnels at certain hours. For instance, one way traffic, and the train isn't coming. Only vehicle access to Whittier.

While very interesting to view, it's sad to see a magnificent piece of machinery rots away to nothing. tom. :fred:
