Walt Longmire
I'm making a batch of that award winning chili that has the prunes in it tomorrow. This will be the 3rd time I've made it. Can hardly wait. I'll hold back my hunger tonight with a couple moose steaks cooked up in cast iron with bacon and mushrooms.

astepup
My recipe calls for pitted prunes as well. Now you've got me hungry for it.

It's a recipe a fire fighter posted here, or on 'the other site' that he won a couple contests with. Damn good stuff.
tous
Don't tell anyone, by my delicious chili has peanut butter in it. Never tried the prunes. Will with the next batch. You make enough for everybody, Walt?
Huaco Kid
Dana Andrews said prunes gave him the runes, and passing them used lots of skills...
Borg warner
Prunes in Chili? That's just wrong. That's like putting pineapple in chili and calling it "Hawaiian Chili". I actually like prunes but not in chili. Maybe if you chopped it really fine no one would notice that there were chunks of prunes in their chili.

Walt Longmire
The prunes add color, texture, and a bit of a sweet taste.
tadbart
Man, Chili sounds great, I have some Florida German Shepherd (deer) that's ground and frozen. Venison chili just tastes so much better than beef. I add a little cinnamon to mine, kidney beans, and a couple different kinds of smoked and grilled peppers. Not really aiming for hot, just flavorful. Let it cool off just a bit more.
Al Czervik
I am a purist. Chili is short for chile con carne, not chile con carne y frijoles, nor cassoulet, etc. But, I'd be willing to try your stew, Walt, as long as it has moose in it. ?️ http://yestotexas.com/if-you-put-beans-in-your-chili-youre-wrong/

Huaco Kid
If it's served with a spoon, it's not chili. It's soup.

Try a teaspoon of creamy peanut butter per gallon if you make a spicy chili. Like cinnamon, it enhances the flavor the spices and adds just a sense of sweetness to offset the acidity of the peppers and onions. Doesn't do a danged thing for beans. I'm gonna try the prunes. You never know what's good. Edited October 21, 2018 by tous

You never know what's good. Tous, it gets worse. I came up pretty poor. My guess the beans were added to expand the size of the meal when I was a kid. As was serving it over white rice, which I sometimes still do. My apologies to the chili purists. It's just what I've been used to my whole life. I certainly ain't got a problem in the world with eating chili without beans and rice, though!
tous
Just joshing you, amigo. Take your chili anyway you like it, but eat a lot of it. I also like chili over rice, one good rib-sticking meal. I remember nights when we had canned tuna mixed with cream of mushroom soup over toast for supper, but I don't recall ever once being hungry. Here's to our parents, then.

Here's to our parents, then. I remember some times being a little hungry. But only because the meals just weren't very appetizing to my young palette. Liver and onions just weren't my favorite. Same with anything SPAM.
