geofri
That is usually for the best. If that was from the Rio Grande, it is not naturally green. It is usually a mixture of toxic waste, sewage and desiccated bodies that the bomberos missed.Haha, It's the Nueces river near Uvalde TX.

geofri
Diving a creek outside of Austin, TX this week: Lots of neat fish, including the Texas or Rio Grande Cichlid. It's also choc full of 20"+ largemouth bass.. didn't get any good [photo]shots though. Lots of beautiful vegetation too. Invasive pleccos.. this one's just a baby. petshop size... they get over a foot long.

In domestic aquarium terms I learned it was a plecostomus. (sp) I had several during my aquarium years. Indeed they do grow large. One of mine did grow to that 12" size in a 50 gal aquarium. Did you know they can squeal? My wife found out one time many years ago. She was feeding the fish and it swam out of the tank and on to her slipper. She had to pull it off and drop it back in the tank. What I would have given for a video of that.

( Plecco is slang/ie didn't want to look up how to spell it! ) I've bowfished a number of them, and a few did a little croak/grunt. Don't think i've heard a squeal though.. that would catch me off guard! Hypostomus plecostomus I believe.. not 100% on the subspecies.

geofri
Florida: Wanted to go check out Jacksonville, St. Augustine, Gainsville, and Ocala. Love it over there. I'm going to start job hunting pretty hard so I can make the jump. This hole was filled with fish spiraling around like a drain. ( luckily reverse flow.. It was pushing out) The Atlantic. North of Jacksonville. Not and impressive photo, but It's been a long time since I've smelled the Atlantic, and seen surf-able waves. Boiling sand is a thing.. it wasn't actually hot though. This state park has wild buffalo, and mustangs released by the spanish. Haven't read up to hear how/why the buffalo are there.. I sure didn't think Florida was in their natural range. There are 3-5 dead center here. Very fascinating area.. It's a lake that rises and lowers some years its dry some it's high so there is prairie and marsh. There were buffalo trails through the mash... no something I'd expect to see. Edited January 27, 2019 by geofri
geofri
Was back in Florida again, but this time for an interview. Vacation time coming to a close. Florida has some wetlands that look pretty similar to some in east tx. Brown Watersnake, it was super chilly. 45F but sunny. Don't think I've found a watersnake out at temps that low before : Proud of a couple, I my lens only zooms to 1.5 or 2x so I had to get pretty close. geofri
This little guy was too cute. Not sure what species of bird it is. Intently followed the gator around, while it was under the weeds and there was just plant movement, it walked around chicken like, eyeballing the moving plants.. When the gator came up above the weeds, it still followed just out of bite range of the gator. Not sure if it was looking for food scraps or what. I never appreciated just how large a Great Horned Owl was until at dusk, I watched one land on the TV antenna on my neighbors house and fall off, because it bent the elements straight down. Turned out it was a pair, and the other one was on the brick chimney. When they flew off together their wing spans were astounding, damn near 5 feet each. Moshe
Yes, East Texas has similar terrain than Florida, along with similar wildlife. The key difference over Florida, is the people are smarter.

We would love to have you in Florida; you seem to truly care about the wetlands and all the critters that help make up that environment. If you have not already, sooner or later you may have the opportunity to see one of our Florida panthers in their natural habitat.

I really do. somehow I'm a conservative-libertarian-capitalist who doesn't hate the environment Seeing a panther would be out of this world! Are you in southern FL? Looks like I'll be setting up camp in the northern end, but weekend road trips will ensure I see all ends of the state in short time.
