Where should I go, and what should I do?

So, I'm burnt out on social media, and don't want to have to constantly explain myself to all the people I know, but I need a place to log some of my memories off the beaten path.

I'm not sure how many of you folks here know me from the old site, but there have to be a few that came over.

I managed to pay off all debt 6 months ago, and have now quit my job with absolutely nothing lined up! Taking a few months off to play and reevaluate career path, and living locations( guess midlife chrisis is hitting closer to 1/3 life).

I've been too busy working to explore much of Texas and all it has to offer( outside this horrid city in Eastern Tx). So I've been playing in-state for a bit, but soon venturing farther.

Have recently purchased a Kayak, and heading out later today to pickup a super ratchet camper top for the danger-ranger.. gonna try out this truck camping thing.

Hopefully I can post photos and videos here without trouble hosting.  More to come whenever I feel like it.

It worked, and I found something i've spent my whole life looking for.. a timber rattlesnake.

Also found a nasty stanky old beaver marinating in the swamp.. with a half dozen baby gators nibbling away at it.

Went to a famous( within texas anyway)spring, outside Austin, TX.   Accounts vary, but there have been somewhere around 8 deaths in this spring, cave divers face a number of dangers. I didn't go too far past safety, stopping around 55' deep before the direction and width changed too much.

Found a photo of myself preparing for a dive on social media thanks to hashtags. Hard to go anywhere without being documented these days!

Went to another lake, a place i've hiked around, but never fished or boated on.

Regretted not bringing a rod.. as other kayakers were catching crappie.

I just paddled around looking for critters. Saw one massive watersnake but it get away before I could get close enough to identify or catch.

Found a new( to me) species of bird.  Crimson Spoonbills.  Didn't know there were pink birds in Texas.

Camped and fished out of the kayak earlier this week. hot and muggy.. sleeping in the tent was miserable.

Caught almost nothing.. one catfish( on a jig oddly enough) and half dozen baby sized largemouth. Peaceful getaway and wasn't worried about catching much.

Fishermen have a responsibility to retrieve snags and not discard fishing line.

I get pretty frustrated. I've always hated seeing litter, but also hate cleaning up after people, especially when you know they will continue the behavior.  Decided to get over it, and so I've been packing out bags of trash on each trip.

Went out Kaying Costal East TX. Was too windy and choppy to go out in the bay, so I stayed in the river and canals.

Stayed late to road cruise for reptiles. Finally found not one but two cottonmouths, a brown snake, and some other misc. Tons of huge spiders out there.

Up to Arkansas. Eureka Springs to be exact. Caught the Crescent Hotel behind the sunset one night. Little bit creepy, like it's history. Story goes a phony cancer doctor kept patients there and many are rumored to haunt the place.

Speaking of houses, eureka springs is full of neat houses. Houston's housing is mostly not to my taste, and being a northerner the houses in this town are closer to what I grew up around. These below aren't, but I thought they were neat albeit a little creepy.

Not really an adventure, but I've been packing up for New Mexico. Tagging along as a meat-hauler/helper on a friend's Elk hunting trip.

Finally, ( wanted one for over 10 years) bought a Canon EOS Rebel.  Trying to figure out how to work it before I leave in a few days.  Snapped a few shots of the herps around the house.

Made it back to TX. Great week, though disappointed with the hunters and lack of skill. I tried to help aid them my best, but we didn't bag an elk.

One bull was shot non-fatally, and after tracking 2 miles we lost it. Hunted for it for several days, and it may still be recovered as the ranger will be using a drone and thermal imaging to search.

My opinion on long range hunting has shifted, and I lean on thinking it's not very ethical or responsible.  (At least for the amateur, though the same can be said about shooting at any animal while ill prepared).

Playing sniper is cool and all, but too many variables in the field, to stack on top of all the other actions of the hunt leading to the shot.  The hunter had made 3 bad shots( total misses the day prior) after his ranger finder reported 500yards on an elk 740yds away. He also forgot to zero windage the next morning so his shot hit the Elk in the hip with his savage 300win mag!   He had also not reloaded his gun or brought extra ammo, so he made two follow up shot(misses) and ran out of ammo.

I was 3-4 miles away glassing with my hunter, when we heard the frantic radio calls to come with the truck and gun.  He was watching his wounded Elk lay in the brush while he could do nothing about it.

Managed to get there and it turned into a s*** show as my hunter tore off after the elk which was 400yards from the dirt track we parked at.  He got to 50yards and botched two shots with his Remington 700 in 30-06.. ( I think all that long range fantasy and converting meters to feet-mil dot-moa-yada yada and trying to calculate his drop at 500 yards threw him off and he wasn't ready for an easy close broad side shot.

I yelled at the group to stop pushing the animal and let it bleed out on the ground. It bedded down 3-4 times, only be be spooked further. Frustrating lesson which I learned myself years ago on a white tail after not listening to all the experienced hunters... Shoot then WAIT. and wait more.

Magnificent animal to see in person, and this shot was taken right after a missed shot.  Note blood on right rear. 7 shots( 2-3 possible hits) later he vanished over the boundary into neighboring tribal land.

Found some treasures sitting on top of a rock by a spring, the only natural water source in miles.

Was too hasty and forgot to check my focus so pics is lousy:

Small chip of turquoise and some chips of mother of pearl along with some shells which do not appear to belong in the area., and a small glass bead in bottom right corner. Looked like an Indian bead, but maybe a bit modern to be a historical find.
