SC Tiger
I was looking at a video about "stropping" a knife (actually it was a straight razor) and I had a thought - couldn't you do that with a leather belt? Would that work or is there something different in the leather finish for a razor strop? Thanks.
syntaxerrorsix
If the belt has exposed grain on the backside it will work just fine. Any wax, or coatings on the "pretty side" may prevent it from working as well.
SC Tiger
Thanks. Kinda neat how you can use everyday things in new and useful ways like that.
janice6
Instead of stropping my wood working tools after sharpening, I cut a 5" diameter piece of 3/4 inch plywood and put an arbor on it to fit into my drill press. Now I spin up the plywood disc and apply various fine polishing compounds to it to sharpen and polish finish the edge all at the same time. Increasing pressure increases the cutting rate of the steel, decreased pressure produces a highly polished finish like a mirror. I use it to sharpen cutting edges to a mirror finish, and the ridged plywood doesn't round the bevel on the cutting edge. Sharpening takes a minute or two and is easily good enough to shave with. 1
arnold ziffle
a one inch thick piece of corregated cardboard from a watermelon box makes a great strop. i've been known to touch up an edge at the store.
