You don't have to put your thumbs forward to grip a revolver properly. Cup & saucer is just wrong, though. It doesn't allow a firm stance. It's not how I fire a revolver. Cup & saucer is not a firm, positive grip. You wouldn't use it on an auto and you shouldn't use it on a wheelie.
