Ratsnakes eat rodents and lizards. Hognose snakes eat toads. Either was it's harmless to you and yours.

I went with a microbiologist/geneticist on a trip to some heavily populated snake areas along the aptly named Snake River about 60 miles south of me. He and I and another fool hunted for rattlesnakes in order to take blood samples, measure them, and milk them for venom samples. We went out for about 5 hours and got around 12 snakes. The largest were around 3' and skinny. Not impressed. I lived in AZ for several years and was used to 3' to 6' rattlesnakes. Some pics from our adventure...

It's a western diamondback. The taxidermist said a big one is about 5'. He said the eastern ones get to 6'. This one wasn't real impressive but it makes me worry about how many are around that I don't know about. We have little kids & lots of animals. This one never rattled or coiled. I saw it moving away from me and unloaded my G27 with no luck. My father-in-law beaned it with a 10/22. I sent my kids to get him as soon as I saw it because I wasn't sure I could hit it with my pistol.

They will deal with the snakes for you and generally keep them away.
