When the E model first came out all the old hands hated it. Called it "the Humpback Hawk". But it grew on everyone and most of us nowdays see pre-E models as kinda odd looking. A pre-E features in 1938's "Test Pilot" .

Anyway, only one of these XB-38s were built, mainly as a feasibility study in case Cyclone production failed. V-1710s were needed for fighters so the idea was shelved. IIRC this one caught fire and was lost.

And no, they didn't counter-rotate... :(

Yes, the P-82 had counter-rotating props. The XP-82, which has been restored and flew at Oshkosh this year, was powered by Merlins, but most later versions used slightly lower rated Allisons (RR wanted big licensing fees after the war).
