When in Highschool, a friend bought a Model T.  It putted like an anemic little toy engine.  But that damn thing would go anywhere!  We drove it up the back side of the ski hill outside of town, just putt-putt-putt right up the steep bank to the top( next to the water tower).

7 idiots, two of us on each running board and three inside.  Then we drove it over the edge and down the ski run.  The little speedometer said 70 (IIRC). It was a little drum like thing in some liquid, but we didn't have time to check it carefully, since we were in danger of being thrown off, or the darned thing rolling over.

It rattled and make all kinds of noises, but that damn little "engine that could" survived the ski run and jumping the curbs of a cross road, between a couple of houses and into the next cross street, before we could get stopped.  Those old brakes weren't very good at all.

We all had a good time, nobody got killed, and we had something to talk about years later.

"Admiral Byrd’s Antarctic Snow Cruiser – Historical Pictures of a Hugely Ambitious One-of-a-Kind Vehicle Developed in the Late 1930s

"Byrd’s Snow Cruiser proved so problematic that it only managed to cover 96 miles in 12 months of activity and much of that in reverse! As a result, when the expedition ended the vehicle was abandoned. She was rediscovered sometime in the 1950s only to float away on an ice shelf and sink to the bottom of the sea."

Looks like the mid 80's Soviet harvesting technology I witnessed.  Except, there weren't any old men doing it.  It was all old women, and young men.

The girl in this picture from 1935, helping to harvest oats, is one of 20,000 German women trained by the Nazi government in its women’s labor service

I wonder what specific "protection" it offers over a soft hat or a helmet.  Plastic?
