i wonder why not a tazer  ?   but gotta wait til all the facts are in for a few months

Some departments have a policy that a tazer is used only when there is a second officer there to back them up, as tazers are not always effective, and the time necessary to switch from the tazer to sidearm might not be enough if the suspect is approaching you at high speed..  Sometimes you only get one shot, so use the one with a better chance of success.
