Valmet
I've always been partial to the M1917 that we used in WW1 myself...
BillKilgore
The arms discussed above are outstanding infantry rifles/carbines, but the original post asked about "long gun". With that said, is there no love for the Ma Deuce? It has been in use for over 85 years and still going strong.
Suspect Unknown
I couldn't resist the urge, I was on a gun crew from 1975-1977, and these things can really make some noise. So this is my favorite long gun, the M109 155mm howitzer.. Edited November 25, 2018 by Suspect Unknown
Cheygriz
LOL How could you be better armed than an Italian soldier with his Glisenti pistol and 6.5 Carcano??
DWARREN123
The only ones I really have experience with are the M-14, M40 bolt, M-16 family. When the weapon has matured it is usually much better than the initial or prototype weapon. The M-16 during it's roll out was hindered by changing the powder for a cheaper/dirtier type and not having chrome lined barrels and coated BCG and bolts to save money. Also telling folks it did not need cleaning or as much cleaning did not help. Caused a lot of folks to get killed until corrected.

And was the M16 superior to the AK-47 during Vietnam? I'm going to side with the Mausers...they had exceptional actions and were often rebuilt after the war into magnificent sporting rifles.

Cheygriz
I've always believed that the 98 Mauser was a superb hunting rifle the 1903 was a superb target rifle But the SMLE was the BATTLE RIFLE among the three.

I agree totally. All three were amazing rifles.
Valmet
In an auto (full or semi), I like an M16A2. A 20” AR with those sights is great to me. Edited April 16, 2021 by Valmet
