Old School
I currently use Flitz (slight abrasive) and Renaissance Wax on guns to put them away for a while. As an aside, I've heard Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish works well. But right now I'm applying and removing by hand. I am thinking about getting some wheels for my bench grinder to replace wipe off and buffing. Am I good using a bench grinder or should I use something designed for polishing / buffing? Any difference in the wheel types (e.g., different "grits")?
BillKilgore
Be extremely careful with a bench grinder for polishing. It is easy to round-off corners, create shallow divots in the flats and buff off bead blasted areas. I use a small buffing wheel in a drill press to polish certain types of wood. With the drill press set on a slow speed may be a safe way to try mechanical buffing. Based on my experience buffing other metal objects, I think a Dremel is the worst option due to the high speed and narrow width of the buffing wheel. Let us know what you come up with.
