gwalchmai
Another iteration on the stump. Lots of fun. Edited April 16, 2021 by gwalchmai
Mrs.Cicero
LOL. I've been burning the same dang stump for years. It's wider than the burn barrel, so I move the burn barrel around on top of it every few months to burn down another part...
gwalchmai
We're blessed with a surplus of poplar which die and fall in the wind. They burn like paper once they dry out so they're not really suitable to burn in my in-laws' woodstove. I cut and split it for the burn pit to roast weenies and marshmallows, and to burn over stumps. This stump is pretty hearty. I think this is my third fire over it. The last one smoldered for a week, then I piled on more logs and they ignited from the old embers. Mix some potassium permanganate with glycerin and watch what happens?

That may be the only real way to get the thing going though. Not sure where to find either compound.

Not sure where to find either compound. You can get glycerin at the hardware store...or online easy. https://www.amazon.com/Potassium-Permanganate/s?k=Potassium+Permanganate There's your postassium. Good old Amazon. The only place on line that hasn't specified they will only ship to schools, labs, or industrial addresses.
Batesmotel
A guy down the street worked for ages to remove a massive elm stump. He finally brought in a dump truck and a BIG track hoe. They had it out and loaded in about an hour. Stumps suck.
gwalchmai
The best and most cost-effective way I've found is to pay someone to grind them out. About $100 IIRC. I enjoy building bonfires, though, so I do that. Plus I have a metric buttload of wood on the back 40.

Conquering a nemesis has something primal to it. Edited April 17, 2021 by LostinTexas

aomagrat
We had a couple of pine trees cut down 15 years ago. The stumps are still in the back yard. Every spring sap still seeps out of the tops of the stumps. We use them for planter stands.

One of the scenes in Shane, a western from the early 1950s has Shane and the homesteader he was helping get after a massive stump using axes and shovels. A triumphant moment when they won. It sucked for the homesteaders west of the cascades trying to wrestle farmland from woods with old growth trees in the 6-12' diameter.
