OK, that was a mess.

I ran into some problems on the new server and I had to call off the transfer for tonight. I'll take another run at it tomorrow night.

Hopefully the second time there won’t be the same issues.

Sounds like a mess. I really hate Plesk, BTW. I have a different admin front end on my server, for convenience sake, but I do most of my work from the command line.

Anyway, I hope you have a good firewall parked in front of that box. One thing I would do (If you are not already) is use a geoip database to block every country that doesn't require access to your system. There isn't much server overhead using geoip. Good luck with it.

It is a mess indeed, so I just reduced my maintenance work to fixing hacks and related holes. At some point issues will take over and force me to start from scratch.

I used to use GeoIP based banning linked in iptables, with a new IP database being pulled via cron every night, but we have international customers and too many got trapped by false negative IP range matches. Also, now most intrusions come from hacked servers within countries that are deemed safe. Last attack even came from a US based server.

Most admins are dumb. You can provide them with all evidence and they still don't fix their ****, so I gave up on notifying anybody. Even RIPE doesn't care anymore when an entire IP range is invested and abused. Hosters sitting in certain countries know exactly what is going on and don't even respond to reports, and crap coming from China is often done through their government.

But most hack attempts come from simple kiddo BS bot networks, trying to access old scripts with holes, spamming pop / ssh / ftp logins or trying to send spam from outdated php scripts, and they are rather primitive. I use Fail2ban for example. Anything trying to log in anywhere and failing 3 times within 1 week gets a perma ban. Got some 50k IPs banned last time I checked. Another script checks emails being sent from php scripts. Anything sending the same mail twice or repeatedly triggered from the same IP ends up in the same ban list.

Maybe at the end of the summer I'll look into an all new shop and server. But until then I'm trying to get away from the news, politics, as well as IT crap, and enjoy life by going to the beach, doing some projects, and not giving a **** about anything for a change. 2020 truly sucked and with Dems now at the wheel, the car can only end up against the wall. Time to get away from that shitshow...

Dang, I signed in thinking it all went well and I'm on the new site without any problems.

Keep telling yourself...

”I’m on the new site without any problems.”

”I’m on the new site without any problems.”

”I’m on the new site without any problems.”

Won’t make it better but maybe it will seem better. FWIW I briefly felt that way.

Will I still be able to voice my opinion here after the great socialist takeover of most of the internet?

I know a few old cops. I R an old Paramedic. It is very doubtful you could even come close to voicing an unbridled opinion without being blown off the interwebs.

I was brought up on a Powerline Crew, in 1969, by a bunch of old MF'ers that demanded respect and attention.  When I was 21... had Just got married...

Still got my wife, and I'm still a Logical, respectful to my elders...politically UN correct a$$hole.

I'm just talkin here...

The above post.   I just finished working with a guy like that.  Never could figure out his direction.

He moved on to a better job.   Glad for him.   We were ready to not get along from the start for some reason.

And i never could figure it out.

At times a healthy tension is a good thing. It keeps all parties sharp and motivated. It isn't much fun for either usually, but not always a bad thing.

I think he was just one of those people who confused leadership with...irritating people.

One of those people that comes pre-pissed.

I was "reported to a Principle of the school,  by a teacher because I looked her in the eyes while talking, and sounded authoritative  I am hard of hearing so I read lips.  And yes,  I am sure of myself!

The Principle laughed WITH me at this.

You assaulter her tender feelings. How dare you be a man in her presence. What were you thinking? 450593858_TinFoil.gif.07216094a6d01ea8aa1c97f1daaca9f5.gif
