I have some unique Western Electric Microwave tubes that they made only for their own use in Bell Labs communications equipment. The lowest noise figure at that time.

railfancwb
Old saying “You can’t do just one thing.” The Interstate System, with its convenience, contributed to hollowing out small rural communities. Jobs and shopping migrated to the larger cities leaving the small towns as mostly bedroom communities.

Actually while shortwave is down internationally....there is still quiet a bit of it out there. The BBC for example still uses it. With a bit of irony Ham Radio has more license hams at this point than ever before. At least in the US.
blueiron
The SWL market is pretty much vacated. The BBC still has a limited presence for Africa and certain Asian markets, but Radio Canada International, Israel Radio International, Radio Moscow, Radio Australia, Radio Austria, Radio Denmark, Voice of the Arabs, Radio Pakistan, and many others are no longer on HF. Even many of the private US broadcasters have sold off their transmitters.

One with three screens is about an hour away, for example. If the movie producers go directly to streaming, as Disney has threatened, that may finish off the few drive ins and walk ins still left after the virus.
