Gunboat1
I had an old SRK many years ago. It got badly pitted/ rusted when I carried it into the ocean on a military exercise which lasted 3 days, during which time we both stayed pretty wet with seawater. It did not work well as a ferrorod striker (before or after the bath.) Break an old hacksaw blade off, and carry the short piece with the ferrorod. It works great as a striker, for almost no weight and bulk. 2

I've never used my SRK or any of my knives to scrape sparks from ferro rod. I just use the scraper/striker that would come with the ferro rod for it. A lot easier to use with no addition of bulk or weight and both of the striker and rod are connected to each other.
Cheygriz
My SRK is Carbon V steel (0170-6?) It works fine as a striker.
Rellik
On an unrelated note, I bought a an SR-1, the folding SRK. Its thick, and the toughest folder I've ever held.
