I went into an Apple store, and one of the genius's said my battery needed replacing..  so he tried..

Then he said he can't, because my battery swelled..  so he gave me a new phone for the price of the battery.

This has happened three times now..  I probably need a new phone.

Fetching mail is causing heavy battery drain? How was it not a problem prior to upgrading the OS?

That is absolutely ridiculous and sounds more like the OS is garbage and not worth upgrading to with older devices.

No, it re-enabled a setting that may have been previously disabled.  (Basically reset to default and moved the setting)  So if you had left the setting at default before you saw no change in behavior.  But if you had changed it, now your device was behaving differently and draining the battery faster than you expect.  In my case, it was the difference between ending the day with 20% battery and 30% battery.
