"According to a court order filed by the Department of Justice (DOJ) on 5 September, investigators want information on users of Obsidian 4, a tool used to control rifle scopes made by night vision specialist American Technologies Network Corp. The app allows gun owners to get a live stream, take video and calibrate their gun scope from an Android or iPhone device. According to the Google Play page for Obsidian 4, it has more than 10,000 downloads. Apple doesn't provide download numbers, so it's unclear how many iPhone owners have been swept up in this latest government data grab."

Now that Frisco KaliFornja has named the NRA a terrorist organization, I am waiting for them to demand the NRA members list, so they can declare all of us terrorists and red flag us

I'm paid up through 2024.  But this new law is enough to make me go stick an NRA sticker on a Prius.

I was there for 7 days last week.  Just outside of China Town.  It was interesting.

Had this happened before i left I would have taken 100 stickers with me and painted the town with it.

If anyone goes:  The Occidental Cigar Club.

I blew my per diem there in 30 minutes flat.  Worth it.  A Scotch menu that would make a Scotsman weep.

I went there a couple of months ago to do a rush order to renew my passport.  The traffic is so bad that the only thing that makes sense is to take the train in and then walk everywhere.  The Federal Building is on the edge of the Tenderloin.  The streets were lined with homeless people and the feces that they live in.  It's just amazing how bad that city has gotten. I wanted to burn my shoes when I got home.

And, they want to do this to the whole country.

And now you know why the brilliant men who designed our constitution (based on generations of philosophers discussing freedom) designed our nation to be a republic and not a democracy.  The system protects the rights of a minority from the whims of a majority.

its an ITAR issue,so if in fact the Comp. did sell .mil Scopes or the software to use them this might be legal, but the DOJ should have a legal request that has merit and specificity.

but then,i don`t own a smart phone.

These are all scopes that anyone can purchase legally.

This has got to be an issue of something legal for sale here...but not for export.    My guess they have a case that crosses borders.  To be fair it's great looking technology and I'd love to have it...but i'm good with my old Leupolds.

They are fishing for someone.

That could never happen.  I'd...be shocked.

I'm going to go watch a movie about fast cars, now, and forget you mentioned it.

Sorry to interrupt the movie but such efforts don't necessarily involve crimes against Federal agents.

Yeah, I know...shocking.

EDIT: Fwiw, if it doesn't involve a Federal agent, the individual must be an interesting character. Either that or the Feds are looking for a test case. For years there has been guidelines in place regarding which cases deserve the attention of the Federal government. How did they focused on that particular app? Think of photocopiers. The data of every single copy made by a photocopier is stored. Just like every single stroke on a computer keyboard.

Sigh of relief, Ricordo is not the target of that investigation.

I think we are on the same page.  There's a story we don't know that prompted this.  My guess is, like your guess, they have a case they just cast the net very wide.  But sometimes you do that and hope you get what you need.

You nailed the technical issues.  They have some kind of recording and are looking for the who, what, when, where and how.

i agree we can legally purchase and own them and the software that works with them.

the problem is,is so did the Taliban and if they have been used and recorded in Afghnaistan that has it becoming a GWOT issue and the patriot act may be in play.

again i disagree with such a vague and wide net approach and they should need specificity and merit in the Warrant or demand, but no one voted to get rid of the Patriot act.
